Planet of the Apes (1968)

Yeah! I’m talking about the original version. Not that lousy Tim Burton remake which I love until I’ve seen this original & the follow up sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Have yet to watch the additional sequels but they may not be good. I mean come on. The ending of PotA was already awesome! The sequel BtPotA hit another notch higher which should have ended the franchise. Hell, based on articles I’ve read Heston hated the movie and wouldn’t want to reprise his role if his version of ending wasn’t followed. I guess both movies made too much money during that time that producers refused to let it die. American Pie franchise comes to mind.

Anyways, I got myself to watch these movies because I’ve just watch the recently released Rise of the Planet of the Apes last night. That movie is like the Phantom Menace of New Hope. Wait, I think X-Men: First Class is more correct since both movies billed themselves as prequel to the movie franchise but had updates or retcon/remake changes incorporated in it. For one, the astronauts only left earth on 2011 and not 1968. And it would appear that its ALZ-113 virus that wipeouts the human race at the same time evolving apes and not the 60s version which suggests nuclear or cold war.

What’s surprising with the 60s original is while some parts of the story makes no sense eg. war wiped out all animals except human, apes, and horses; humans are all vegetarians; men became mute (At least make a few grunting or purr sounds.), I find myself loving the original plot. Truly this is a future that is worth exploring. I believe the psychic mutants have more technology than they let on. If only they had better effects, this would be even better. I guess having Ms. Linda Harrison in bikini helps a lot. Damn she’s HOT!
